Wow! what a record! Echo and the Bunnymens' most underrated recording is the one people should remember most, though it's often overlooked and overshadowed by their other recordings. I got turned on to Echo by accident, or by misguided purpose. Actually, it came about in the early 80's while browsing through used record stores, indie/alternative music stores. I went through a phase in which I sought out artists by names (the lack of knowing absolutely nothing of the artists I was seeking.) I sought out names that sounded abstract, strange or way different from silly mainstream artists like Duran Duran, Culture Club and others of the mainstream-teeny bopper regurited radioplay of that time, I found a magic recording/group; Echo and the Bunnymen. The album: Porcupine. The album is a great first album for any Echo fan, new or old. It has some of the already known classics as: The Back of Love, The Cutter. But the tracks other than those were the ones that blew my mind to new musical heights. It has the swirly Chameleons U.K. type guitar riffs, spacious-atmospherical soundscapes. The song writing is as outlandish and abstract as the music. The Bunnymen were at the peak-and-pinnacle of their "neo-psychedelic-experimentation" at this point, not to detract the importance of their former and latter releses. Often times, this album as reviewed, has had dicey to sketchy mixed reviews. Noted of these recordings as "too claustrophobic," by some and "over- indulgent showboating," as said by others in Rock/Alternative journalism.Their use of sitars, farfisa (keyboards) and oceanic themes musically were presented here. Maybe an omen or a sign of songs to come forth in the near future for them, meaning the oceanic/sea themed "Ocean Rain" Sire/ Korova Records 1984. As this album presents the fullness of their music in contrast to the 'Ocean Rain' lp was to be as their most minimal and sparsest set to follow. Also an interesting piece of trivial fact is that their producer, known then as "Kingbird," is none other than Ian Broudie of the Lightning Seeds. He furthered his vision and their sound well into the late 1980's to the mid ninties with his aforementioned group. Other bands I found during my exploration of interesting band names yielded groups such as: Jesus and the Mary Chains'-PsychoCandy, The Cure-Seventeen Seconds and Faith Lp's, Ultravoxs'-Vienna and New Orders'- Fact. 50 1981 Movement Lp. These albums and many like them changed my mind for the rest of my life. No more Dead or Alive and Duran Duran for me back then....John W.
