As a new knitter, it is hard to find patterns that only contain the KNIT stitch. The purl stitch is a bit tricky when you are a newbie. Let's hone your KNIT stitch skills on a simple pattern. The simple diagonal dishcloth that everyone loves, it a great way to practice your skills.
This is a ubiquitous pattern and do not claim it as my own.
Materials: a few oz of cotton yarn. You can buy a ball at Walmart and make two cloths from it.
knitting needles, size 7, 8 or 9. Guage is not critical
Instructions: Cast on 3 sts.
Row 1: Knit across, turn
Row 2: Knit 1, increase in next stitch, Knit 1 stitch, turn
Row 3: Knit 1, increase in next stitch, Knit across to the end of the row, turn
Row 4: Knit 1, increase in next stitch, Knit across to the end of the row, turn
Row 5-40: Knit 2, yarn over, Knit across to the end of the row, turn
Now it is time to come down the other side...
Row 41: Knit 1, Knit two together, yarn over, Knit two together, Knit across to the end of the row, turn
Rows 42-74: Knit 1, Knit two together, yarn over, Knit two together, Knit across to the end of the row, turn
Rows 75-78: Knit 1, Knit 2 together, Knit to end of the row, turn
Row 79: Bind off.
Darn in your loose ends. Now wash those dishes!
