These simple Facts & Guidelines were handed down to me by my Grandfather, the foremost expert and most knowledgable Antique Dealer/Collector of his day. So said his peers, other Antique Dealers & Collectors who always came to J.Paul Kelly, (that's my Grandfather!) when they had any question about any Antique. So lets get started, shall we?
Nomenclature of Antiques & Collectables:
1) Q: What classifies an Antique as an Antique? A: An Antique is any object, photo, clothing, or painting, musical instrument....got the idea now?...that is man made (even in a machine) and 100 + 1 years old minimum. No exceptions, & no younger in age! There are more in depth classifications, but for our purposes this is right on the money for use on eBay! (working or not)
2) Q: What classifies an item as Vintage? A: Vintage items are any item or object, man made, that is from 60 - 100 years old! In working order or not, depending upon demand.
3) Q: What classifies an item as Collectible? A: Collectible items are any items (working or not & man made) that are from 20 - 60 years old. No younger or older!
4) Any item from today - 20 years old is either a; new 1 - 10 y.o. or a used 10 - 20 year old item. * This especially holds true today with the majority of our Gross National Products & International Imports being disposable, and having shelf lives of days & hours.
Example given: American Depression Glass is often listed as Antique, and described as Antique. However it is not. Depression glass falls into the Vintage Glass Classification due to its age & when it was made, 1920 - 1930. This is often misleading to new ebayers, and frustrating to long time ebayers as we know it is not listed properly.
I hope this will help you to list your items, and find the items you want more easily! Happy ebaying to everyone!
