This is one guide in a three (3) guide series about the ever popular Early American Prescut (EAPC) glassware found on eBay and many other places as well.  This guide will focus on the "Oatmeal" pieces of the Anchor Hocking Prescut catalog.  For more background on EAPC, please see my first EAPC guide Early American Prescut EAPC Glass:  Then, Now, Forever.

I've had a lot of great feedback on my first EAPC guide and a lot of questions as well.  I thought it might be helpful to add some guides that focused on the EAPC collection piece-by-piece and that is the driving force behind this guide.

INTRODUCTION

EAPC was first manufactured by Anchor Hocking Glass Corporation in the year 1960.  Manufacturing of most of the EAPC pieces was stopped in the late 1970's, but a few pieces (like the very common sugar bowl, creamer, and cruets) were made until the late 1990's.

EAPC was manufactured in two (2) similar and, yet, distinct patterns and these separate patterns have each been given commonly used nicknames by the collecting community:  "Star of David" and "Oatmeal". I have also heard people refer to "Oatmeal" as "Wheat".  "Pineapple" has also been lumped into the EAPC umbrella by collectors, but this pattern originated almost 20 years before EAPC.

I recently learned that the "Oatmeal" pattern was not intended by Anchor Hocking to be an EAPC pattern.  It was listed in Anchor Hocking's catalog as Prescut glass rather than Early American Prescut Glass.  Many people who buy and sell on eBay use the term EAPC for the "Oatmeal" pattern and, therefore, it makes sense to continue calling "Oatmeal" an EAPC piece.

DESCRIPTION

A small percentage of the Prescut catalog includes items that have been dubbed "Oatmeal", however, these items are extremely common.  These pieces do not have a star in their pattern and they are called "Oatmeal" because they were manufactured for mass domestic distribution in packages of oatmeal.  These pieces include:

Berry Bowl

The berry bowl is shown in the photo above the furthest to the left.  It is 4-1/4 inches in diameter at the rim, which is wider than the sherbert (or custard) bowl.  It is also shorter than the sherbert bowl.  Both berry bowl and sherbert bowl have smooth rims.

Sherbert or Custard Bowl

The sherbert (or custard) bowl is shown as the 2nd piece from the left behind the saucer.  It is 3-5/8 inches in diameter and is taller than the berry bowl.

Punch Cups and Saucers

The Prescut "Oatmeal" punch cup is of the exact same design as the EAPC "Star of David" punch cup.  It is appropriate to match these punch cups with EAPC punch bowls.  These cups are very common and I seem to have dozens of them.

I think that the saucers are less common and often do not show up on eBay.  I've had success selling punch cups when I pair them with saucers.  Both saucers and punch cups have smooth rims.

To my knowledge, there is no EAPC "Star of David" saucer, but there is an EAPC "Star of David" coaster that is smaller than the saucer in diameter and has a scalloped edge.

Water Tumbler

The water tumbler (shown here in the middle) is mentioned in collector's books as being a 9 oz glass.  According to my measurements (and the measurements of other eBayer's) this glass is actually just a little less than 8 ounces in volume and approximately 4-1/4 inches tall.

Juice Tumbler

The juice tumbler shown below is a little shorter than the water tumbler and is 4-ounces in volume.  It is similar to the EAPC "Star of David" juice tumbler of the same size (shown in the photo below).  You must be careful not to mistake the two.

Soap Dish

The Prescut soap dish is also in the "Oatmeal" pattern, but is not as plentiful as the other "Oatmeal" pieces and therefore may not have been distributed in packages of oatmeal.  See a photo of the soap dish below:

Short (Old Fashioned) Tumbler

The old fashioned tumbler is shown in the photo above 2nd from the right behind the saucer.  Upon volume measurement, it is 7 ounces in volume and about 3-1/4 inches tall.  It is shorter than both the water tumbler and the juice tumbler.

BUYING AND SELLING OATMEAL

Because the Oatmeal pieces were distributed in mass, most pieces are very common and difficult to sell individually on eBay because of the high shipping cost to sale price ratio .  I've had some success selling the juice glasses in groups of threes and have had success selling the punch cups when paired with the saucers.  The soap dish is the only piece that appears to be sold as an individual item on eBay.

RESOURCES

A great resource for all collectors of vintage glassware is the the book "Collectible Glassware  from the 40s, 50s, 60s" by Gene and Cathy Florence.  The 8th Edition (most recent) is absolutely amazing with full color photos for every pattern as well as pricing guides.  This book is a joy to read and a great help to those of us who buy and sell.
