What are the most important things to be aware of in order to increase the life of your laptop or portable device?
If you buy a nice laptop and spend a couple of hundreds dollars more than the average price you would like to take good care of your investment! Even if you buy cheaper laptop why not keep it in good working order!
Here are few tips that will help you extend the life of your device:
1) Keep you portable device clean and dry. Use a duster to clean the fans every few months, check if the fans turn on when the computer is being used and gets HOT. If your device gets too hot (overheats) while in use spend few minutes to research for common problems/fixes for your model. If you are suspecting anything wrong don't hesitate to take it to the repair center, it will be cheap repair compare to the price that you will have to pay if you wait until the laptop completely die!
2) If you are not using the laptop don't keep the AC adapter connected, this only increases the chances of failure or getting a power surge. Also when connecting to a external LAN (wired) network or a modem use a grounding adapters, they are cheap and will prevent you and your computer from electric surge from not grounded phone lines. This also applies if you are connecting devices to audio or video outputs of your laptop.
3) Avoid leaving your laptop on soft (cushion) surfaces or covering it with a blanket this will kill it may even cause a fire!
4) If you have to move your laptop handle it gently, dropping it even from few inches will decrease the life of the hard drive and also keep in mind that the LCD display is made on a tiny glass surface so it's also fragile.
5) If the worst happens and you spill liquid on your computer DON'T PLUG IN THE CHARGER! Immediately remove the battery, try to dry it with a towel and use your hair drier on a low temperature to remove all the moisture. If you are suspecting that the liquid went inside open the computer or take it to an expert to do so and dry it. After the computer is dry, try to power it on and check if everything is working if there is any failure remove the battery again and take it to the repair shop before it becomes too late.
6) Eventually one day when your computer life comes to it's end don't put it on the trash or if you replace any defective parts don't put them on the trash, there is many people and recycle places that will pay some $$ for your junk and that will also keep the environment clean for our children
