I grew up about a mile from Graceland in a suburb of Memphis called Whitehaven. In the late '60s, it was always a trip to go see Elvis at his home. Back then, the lines of tourists weren't so long, except in the summer months, and the walls of Graceland had not been scribbled all over with messages from around the world.
Of course, as a kid, I never really thought Elvis would die.
I also thought, then, he was kind of a joke. And yet, it was always a thrill when you would peer through the gate and see a figure in the distance, often on horseback. My gang never knew that Elvis rarely left the house. We barely even listened to his music. (We were more focused on the Velvet Underground or Frank Zappa.)
In short, we didn't see IT coming: the afterlife of Elvis through crazy products and marketing gone haywire.
Since the death of Elvis, this book has remained one of my favorite Presley products. Find it today at PopKrazy.
