Be aware that January, 2009 is the last month that the old common ELT frequencies of 121.5 / 243.0 MHz will be monitored by the U. S. satellite system.  The FAA / FCC is almost surely to mandate a switch of equipment over to the new 406 MHz system, though they have not done so yet.  While these new systems are currently expensive ($800-$1000) by our older ELT standards, the older systems will more than likely become useless by regulation.
