I started selling ebooks over a year ago with the assurance that I could make lots of money doing so. It's a nice concept-no items to ship, just send a download link. And the same ebook, bought once, could be sold over and over.
Sounds easy, doesn't it? I thought so too.
I began buying packages of ebooks, then started reselling. Picked up a few more here and there, and started selling those as well. Things started slow, then picked up some speed. I opened an Ebay store and had my entire inventory listed.
Then things began to change........
As more and more people jumped on the "ebook bandwagon", it was a constant battle to find the "newest and best" ebooks. Too many ebooks have fallen by the wayside-there are more people selling them and less wanting to buy them. An example-the Ebay Entrepreneur Kit. I sold 40 one month, 10 the next month, then NONE. Why? Because no one wanted to pay $1.99 for information, they would rather pay a penny or two. This, in my opinion, devalues the ebooks. It seems that no one CARES that there is actual information in these ebooks, all they want is the feedback and resell rights. And other ebooks that have a SET minimum price that you're supposed to sell it for(like IProfit)-people think"well, how can they check?" Or "What they know won't hurt them". That's dishonest and unfair.
What I sell is INFORMATION. Hobbies, business, recipes, you name it. I'm not selling FEEDBACK, and I'm not buying it. That's all the penny ebooks are for is feedback-and a draw to an outside website, where people will look for MORE penny ebooks. Sell them one, they'll buy more-but overlook your REGULAR PRICED ebooks-as well as everyone else's. What is the point of that? You might as well hand all your sellers fees to the nearest charity, it would be more worthwhile.
My store is now closed, and my ebook listings are minimal. I'm not giving up, but I'm not changing MY ways of doing business. I feel that the ebooks I sell are worth the price I am asking for them, and that won't change.
There is so much I have learned in the past year about ebook sales, and maybe someday I will write my own ebook on the subject-but don't expect to buy it for a penny.
