E-85 and Ethanol are becoming more of a common place in our gasolines throughout the nation. Most areas have gasoline containing at least 10% ethanol. E85 is going to become more used throughtout the midwest in the near future. Both E85 and ethanol run leaner than good old gasoline does. Now you ask.....how does that effect my minibike or go kart?
1. Old school fully adjustable carbs(as used in the 60s thru early 80s) are going to have to be richened up to keep your engine running properly. If you do not richen your mixture, you will have hard starting, flat spots, poor idling, and poor top end performance.
2. In a modern day fixed jet non adjustable carb (most having primer bulbs and no choke levers) these carbs are NOT adjustable and are always going to run poorly, be hard to start and lack performance. Your easiest cure is to replaced your carb with an adjustable carb.
3. No matter what type carb you have you have to remember any sort of alcohol(E-85, ethanol, methanol) is corrosive to aluminum parts. You should do 1 of 2 things if not both to protect your carb when your bike is to sit for any length of time. Shut fuel petcock off and run engine until it dies and or use 1 of my float bowl drain kits (located in my store) and install the kit to your carb float bowl, so you can drain the bowl for storage.
