Dungeon Keeper - Gamers Guide to Dungeon Keeper
Dungeon Keeper is a PC game that literally turns the premise of most other strategy games on its head. Traditionally, video game players take command of one or more characters who must complete a quest by facing a number of traps and obstacles. In the game Dungeon Keeper, the player is the one in charge of all the traps and dungeons. His goal is to defend his world from the computer controlled heroes trying to penetrate it.
Released in 1997 by Electronic Arts, Dungeon Keeper functions in the same vein as the majority of computer-based roleplaying games. Players use a combination of their mouse and keyboard to complete a number of tasks, such as issuing commands, constructing buildings or changing in-game visual angles. Battles are conducted in similar fashion, with the mouse controlling where units are deployed and what strategy to use.
The original game met with some success upon release, which led to the release of a sequel, Dungeon Keeper 2. Although the overall concept of the game remained the same, the graphics were changed dramatically. In this version of the game, characters appeared in three-dimensions as opposed to the flat 2-D creatures from the first. A third Dungeon Keeper was initially slated for release a few years later, but never materialized.
Although both games do offer a certain amount of multiplayer gaming, they were both released before large scale multiplayers became popular. As such, the multiplayer options are rather limited. An expansion pack called The Deeper Dungeons was released in late 1997 for the original game. It includes a number of additional levels and a few software improvements.
