Drywall Lifts and Hoists (Recommendations and Buyers Guide)

As many of you know, getting drywall up to the ceiling can be tough--if not a daunting task.  You may have seen professional or do-it-yourselfers hold it uop to the ceiling with their heads.  This works, buy requires a great deal of coordination and is quite awkward.  Another option is to rent a rig (drywall lift) from you local rental store or buy a new one.  Rentals typically range from $50-$75/day and you can buy a new one for as little as $200.  You simply load a sheet of drywall or sheetrock on it and then crank it up to the ceiling.  It holds the sheet in place while you nail or screw it to the joists.  We recommend purchasing a model that meets your demands.  Please consider the following before purchasing:

1. What height will you require?  Most standard lifts are 11 feet.  This is perfect for 80% of homes or for those finishing their basement.  For those that need something more, there are 15 and 16 foot models available.  These will handle 99% of homes with the great rooms and vaulted ceilings.
2. Weight Requirements.  There are several models to choose from.  We recommend purchasing a contractors grade.  These generally support 150 lbs. or more.
3. Brand.  There are several great brands on the market and many that are junk.  We recomend Platinum Tool, Tele-Pro, or BilJax.  Platinum tool and Telepro are sold here on EBAY.  Again, we strongly caution against purchasing the off labels.

If you don't want to use a lift, you can also use a couple of drywall jacks out of 2X4's.  Make the overall height an inch or two taller from the floor to the underside of the trusses.  Although this is the old fashioned method and takes time and experience, it does work.
