Dry itchy skin is very common in the winter time, your skin needs moisture to stay soft and smooth and in the winter time that can be diffcult to achieve. But fortunately there are several things that you can do to help. I've been making bath products for about fourteen years now and this is some of what I've learned in the past fourteen years.
1. Use a humidifer and try to keep the moisture in your home set to about 45 %
2. Drink plenty of water.
3. When bathing use a moisturizing bath bomb, or limit your shower or bath time to no more than 15 minutes. And unless you are using a bath bomb try to not get your shower or bath water to hot (hot water dries out the skin).
4 Avoid using harsh soaps on your skin, something that contains glycerin such as a soap from some of the soap makers right here on ebay works well. Otherwise try Dove or Olay, Deoderant soaps can be very drying.
5. Taking a supplement of Omega 3 or Flax Seed Oil can also be helpful.
6. When toweling dry don't rub the skin, instead blot or pat dry so that there will still be some moisture left on your skin.
7. It's also helpful to moisturize right after your shower or bath when your skin is still moist. And then again right before bedtime
8. When it comes to lotions always check your label. Most of the store brands contain a lot of chemicals that may feel good when you apply the lotion but won't actually do anything for your skin. The ingredients on the label will read in order of how much of that ingredient the lotion really contains. The first ingredient is usually water followed by a bunch of chemical names and then the good stuff(often the lotion will contain only minute quanities of it.) It's been years since I've used a store bought lotion but one that I can reccomend is Neutrogena Norwegian Formula.
9. There are a lot of good handmade lotions and creams or body butters out there that are being sold right here on ebay. Some of the main lotion ingredients that I look for are, Glycerin, Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, andVirgin Olive Oil, Jojoba, and Grapeseed Oil are also very good for your skin. There are I'm sure, other butters and oils that work equally well. These are just the ones that I've used with success. Some people swear by Bag Balm or Udder Cream which the farmers use on cow udders and others will reccomend Lanolin ( a moisturizer which is made from sheeps wool).
A few people have told me that in a pinch they have actually used crisco (which helps to seal in moisture & sooth extra irritated dry skin but can also be very messy!)
10. Don't wear wool or other irritating fabrics, which just make your skin all the more itchy.
11. Always remember that when it comes to your skin, cheaper isn't always better!
12. Be sure to check for allergies before using a new product.
