Generally, driving at night is not recommended for obvious reasons: Fatigue. Driving while tired or even worse, sleepy can be deadly. No gig is worth putting your own life or that of others in danger. Drive during daylight hours and only when you have had adequate rest.
There is one exception worth considering though: Driving at night can help avoid to major obstacles that touring bands often encounter: Traffic and heat. If you can make arrangements to drive through the night, you can often avoid traffic. In-fact you can often greatly improve your mileage per hour by driving at night because not only will there be no traffic jams, there can sometimes be so little traffic that you make better time than expected!
Also, in the hot summer months, driving in extreme heat can really be uncomfortable and cause tension in the band van. Driving through the night can offer the opportunity to drive in greater comfort. It is critical that you consider someone for this driving task who is NOT in the band and is able to get some rest while the band is performing. For more on that topic, see “Designated Driver”
