Downsize Your Rings, Don't Cut Them, and Lose Gold
Wax Them Instead
Recently, I bought a fabulous gold and hematite Intaglio ring that had no backing of resin or gold behind the stone. Unfortunately, it was at least a full size or more too big for me. I considered having a jeweler cut and downsize it to fit me, but didn't want to spoil the ring or lose any gold grams.
I ran a home test with candle wax, instead.
First, I put paper towels on my formica table top.
Second, I lit a 3 inch diameter candle.
Third, once the lit candle made a pool of melted liquid wax, I poured the liquid into the back of the stone, filling it up to the gold with layer after layer of liquid wax.
Fourth, I held the ring upside down so that the wax could dry level behind the gold and large hematite stone.
This whole process only took about 5 minutes!
Now my favorite ring fits perfectly. It didn't cost me a cent. If I ever decide to remove the wax, I only have to boil water and pour it in a small bowl with the ring in it. The wax will melt.
