Double or Nothing? The Myth of the "Number 5" Revealed!

Double or nothing- the number 5 at the beginning of a manufacturer's coupon bar code is confirmation that a coupon can be "doubled " at the checkout...or is it? This is a common myth or misconception that is passed on from coupon hunter to coupon hunter. Whether or not the much coveted "number 5" is present on a coupon is an often asked question in my in-box if the coupon's bar code is partially obscured in a listing.

Have no fear! I am here to bust this myth wide open with documented proof that the "number 5" is NOT RELEVANT when it comes to a coupon's potential as a doubler, tripler etc. In order to break this cycle of misinformation, I dug into my over flowing box of extra expired coupons that I keep in the office and looked at 6 months worth of coupons. After three hours of looking for those famous "DO NOT DOUBLE OR TRIPLE" and "NOT SUBJECT TO DOUBLING" disclaimers, I came up with a whole raft of  "DO NOT DOUBLE" coupons with the number 5 at the beginning of the bar code. I only found two (both HEFTY products) that have the equally dreaded "number 9" in the beginning of the bar code. Through a little research on the information superhighway, I discovered that the number nine is more common in "blinkies" and that up to 95% of all coupons (regardless of the beginning digit) WILL DOUBLE.

Please feel free to peruse my collection of "number fives" below. The first picture has the two Hefty coupons with the number nine in the barcode.

I hope this visual proof helps. It may even cut down on the amount of time a coupon hunter spends looking for the 5 at the beginning of the barcode...

The myth of the number 5 is debunked.
