I have 2 children 20 months apart and I have to say that I did a lot of research on strollers before I bought any of mine.
The first one was the Graco chaffeur. I liked it because the seat folded flat as a basinet and could be turned around so the baby could face you. I don't agree with keeping baby in the car seat when you are out and about in a stroller. It is more weight you are pushing and those seats can be really make baby really hot and sweaty in the summer months. The cons to this stroller was the squeaking.... Graco strollers have a habit of squeaking, and the size. To fit it in the trunk of our car I had to take the basinet off, put the frame in the trunk and then the basinet but overall it was a great stroller. I still have it in the garage and it will get used for day trips to places like Disney, where you need the storage space.
We took our first vacation for 3 weeks when our son was 3 months old and once we returned I started looking for a more compact stroller. There was no space in the vehicle for luggage once you put the stroller in! We even had to catch 2 taxis in NYC to accomodate the stroller.
As our son was still so young we chose the Peg Perego P3. I have recommended this stroller to everyone I know who can afford it. I love it. It folds like an umbrella, full reclines, has a snack tray, and a good size sun canopy that can be adjusted to any angle. Height adjustable handles and a step on the back for a toddler to hitch a ride. The only draw back, the parent cup holder doesn't hold up to plane travel. If you don't like to deal with a clip in car seat but want baby to face you they have a version of the P3 called the Pramette and baby can face you in that one. It has all the same features of the P3.
When number 2 was coming along less than 20 months after the first I needed something to accomodate a sleeping baby and a toddler. I didn't like the Jeep or the Graco tandem strollers as the front seats are really inadequate. The seat back is low, the sun shade is minimal and the seat doesn't recline. There is also no side support in the seat to stop a toddler from sliding out.
I loved the Peg Perego Duette but as I am 5"2 and am petite and we didn't own an SUV I knew this was not an option. This stroller is fantastic and if vehicle space is not an option then I would consider this or the Power Jane. Power Jane is a tandem jogger.
So I compromised on seating flexibility and went with the Peg Perego Tender XL. Now if you don't do lots of days trips or you don't think you will taking 2 little ones out with you on your own, then there are other options but this worked great for us. Back seat converts to a bassinet, front seat reclines, good sun canopies. Yes the baskets are small, but we use the clips at the back to hang a diaper bag on, that is what they are there for, and put snacks or sweaters underneath in the baskets when we go to Disney for the day and it really hasn't been too much of a problem. This is very light weight and fits in my trunk, it didn't fit in my husbands but compared to most doubles this was the only one I found that didn't require something to be removed prior to being folded or put in the trunk. My youngest is now 2 and refuses to sit still and my 3.5 year old has endless energy so when we go out for the whole day we take the P3 and a Baby jogger single city series.
Both our Peg Strollers have been used a LOT. There is no damage to either one, I have washed the seats many times and they haven't even faded, the only thing I would say is the back tread on the double wore down pretty quickly. The Duette now has semi-pneumatic tires, but I don't think they will be added to the Tender as it would take away from the compact size when folded.
The baby jogger city series is great as it was a higher seat back and accomodates children up to 5. Saves you having to rent one everytime you go to an amusement park. If you want a jogger because they are smooth to push but want something compact as well take a look at the Valco buggster. It is an umbrella fold, 3 wheel stroller with a big sun canopy.
For short trips to the store I take the P3 and the older one climbs on back.
We also have a double jogger, for exercising. I don't recommend them for every day use as they are a pain to get in and out of places and the seats are never vertical, they always seem to be reclined.
Ultimately you need to work out what is going to make you feel like you baby or babies are safe when you are out and about. What can you really lift and what is your lifestyle going to be like. A lot of strollers in the US are designed for malls or jogging and nothing in between, so if you want to get an idea of what works well for your lifestyle, perhaps you live in a city with lots of sidewalks or brick etc, take a look at a UK website. Not everyone uses their stroller just for the mall and what works for me or your best friend may not work for you.
