Japanese Morning Glories are very unique in colors and shapes and desired by many Morning Glory collectors.
I have noticed that here at Ebay are some Morning Glory sellers, who offer Japanese Morning Glories to exorbitant prices, though they are open pollinated or Hybrids and won't ever match the pictures shown.
Seeds which are open pollinated or taken from a hybrid, may either be sterile or more commonly fail to breed true, not incorporating and expressing the desired traits of the parent, and the money you are going to spend for them is like flushing it down the drain.
You can easily get cross pollinated plants yourself with different shapes and colors by just planting some different cheap heirloom varieties close together. The bees will do the rest for you and you will be surpirsed how many different new plants you will get in the following year.
Here are some examples from my own garden. (Those are crosses between heavenly blue, flying saucer, some star varieties and Scarlet o' Hara.)
Would you believe that you can get over the years those wonderful Morning Glories just by mixing them all up? Well, here is the proof. But just because they look Japanese, doesn't mean they ARE Japanese. To get the real Japanese Morning Glories, you would have to know where they are coming from and be absolutely sure, they are not open pollinated. The ones pictured above can't reproduce themselves like they appear in one year. They may show up as a simple heavenly blue a year later or just a flying saucer. That's why, as a serious seed seller, I would never sell those, making people believe, they would get what they see.
I urge everybody to read item descriptions carefully before spending $10 or more for a few allegedly Japanese Morning Glories. If you read something about 'open pollinated' or 'from my own yard', keep your money and hit the back button. If you don't find any info on how they have been pollinated, ask the seller, before you buy.
Please be careful and don't let yourself fool by pretty pictures and the knowledge, some sellers pretend to have about Japanese Morning Glories. They are selling seeds from open pollinated plants, like the ones you see above and are robbing you your money.
