You've noticed that domain names seem to do what little else does these days... INCREASE IN VALUE

I noticed that myself years ago and here I'll list some of the things that you can do to profit from buying them. I started buying up all of the domain names that I could find and before long, I had a pretty nice collection of domains. I learned quickly that some brought more money than others when listed for sale. Domain names are much like real estate in that there are only so many relevant, easy to remember names available that end in .com. Once they're bought, that's it. They're gone! The only way to purchase them at that point is to pay what the new owner asks for them. With that said, here are a few tips to keep in mind when you're investing in that great domain name.

  • Typically, any domain name that ends in .com will have more value than the same name ending in .net, .org, .ws or .biz (the most common extensions you'll find). For example, if you had the opportunity to purchase AnyDomain.com or AnyDomain.ws, you will realize a much higher increase in value, and therefore a higher profit, from AnyDomain.com. This is due, in part, to the fact that most visitors habitually type in .com over any other extension. And it's also easier to remember.
  • The more practical the name, the better. Remember that a domain name, aka, web site address is just that: an address. Visitors to the site must be able to easily remember the address. For word-of-mouth marketing to work best, people should be able to easily recall the address when talking to or e-mailing friends. Which is easier to remember in a conversation with your friends - MyLongOverlyDescriptiveDomainName.com or MyShortDomain.com? Exactly my point. If you remember it with ease, it's easier to spread the word about it, therefore the value potential of the name will likely be higher.
  • Keep an eye out for great domains on eBay, as well as on any of the popular domain name forums. You can find them by searching for "popular domain name forums" on your favorite search engine. Get to know the fellow domainers on the forums and ask questions. Almost all of the forums are free to join and there is a wealth of information right there for you anytime, day or night.
  • Don't be fooled by "free domain appraisals" you find online. In my opinion, they are very inaccurate and can easily mislead you into thinking you've found a domain worth way more than it actually is. However, don't rely completely on my opinion... try "appraising" the same domain name on two or three different free services and you'll see how wildly the value ranges.
  • Always park your domains somewhere that pays you a percentage of advertising profits. Some registrars park your domains for free, but don't pay you any of the profits from advertising clicks. There are many great domain parking services out there and they can be found by searching for the term "domain parking" on your favorite search engine. Your domains can be registered an ABC registrar, and parked at XYZ parking service - they don't have to be parked where they're registered. Paid parking is a very important step in domaining since it gives you the opportunity to monetize your portfolio while you try and resell them. Anytime you can offset your registration fees with some income is a good thing. You'll also find that some are more valuable to you parked than sold.

I keep a constant watch for useful, high-quality and valuable domain names and list many of them for sale on eBay. Please VISIT MY CURRENT AUCTIONS and feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I'll be happy to assist in any way that I can.

Most of all, have fun! Picking out names and purchasing them is a fun business or hobby. And always remember, like real estate, there's only so much available. One person's junk is another's treasure! A domain name that means little to you may be exactly what another person has been searching for.
