Diet chewing gum for control of hunger pangs to aid in weight loss is now emerging as the next big wave in products using Hoodia Gordonii as the main ingredient. Last year it was the lollipops. A few companies came out with Hoodia candy "chews", Hoodia bars and the shakes have been around for a while. But a "chicklet" of Hoodia chewing gum is quite small and the questions begs to be answered.....Can these Hoodia chewing gum products really work?

There are critics of the new Hoodia chewing gum products that complain of insufficient amounts of active ingredients in a small piece of chewing gum. This issue is addressed in two ways. Some of the companies that made chewing gum with Hoodia, did fall a bit short when it came to content. There are some brands with as little as 120 mg of low potency concentrate in them. For these brands the complaint about inadequate amounts of hoodia might be warranted.

However, with additional months of research and development, other companies have now come out with higher potency diet chewing gum with Hoodia. NuTrimU by NutraEnterprises LLC, Slimntrim and ChewAway by Dietary Formulae Inc are examples, with a robust 500mg of high potency concentrate. The Hoodia in their gum is tested by an independant third party (Alkemists Pharmaceutical Labs) and the results are published. They contracted with a seasoned gum/candy manufacturer and took great care to avoid heating the Hoodia in the process of creating the gum, ensuring that it maintain activity and potency.

In addition, they also provide C.I.T.E.S Certificates for the same batch of Hoodia used in making their gum, proving it to be South African, the highest quality available. Not all Hoodia gum manufacturers are doing this. They all do claim to use South African Hoodia, but they don't back up their claims with any documentation at all. These two things, the Alkemists test results and proof of batch specific origin of the Hoodia (C.I.T.E.S) are mandatory for the discerning consumer in this market flooded with low grade and/or fake Hoodia products.

But still, what is the point of putting Hoodia in chewing gum, other than the obvious fact that is tastes good, satisfies the urge to snack, provides oral gratification, is a very, very convenient, enjoyable and event healthy way to take Hoodia? (Chewing gum has been shown in scientific studies to relieve stress, improve concentration, clean teeth and even aid digestion to name a few side benefits).

The answer to this goes back to the history of Hoodia and the San Tribe who are credited with it's discovery. They use Hoodia by peeling away the spinny skins to leave just the inner core or heart of the stem. They most certainly did not extract the water and dry it, grind it into powder, put it into capsules and then swallow them. They just "chew" the pulp. The best products are those made from the same inner core or heart of the Hoodia stems. It is likely that the San knowing what they do about using this amazing plant, also know that the best way to rapidly absorb the active ingredients is to chew it.

Without doing any fancy scientific testing, the San know from real life experience, that higher a concentration of active ingredients are obtained, and with much more efficiency, when it is chewed as opposed to swallowed. Up to 90% absorption is possible through the "capillary rich" lining of the mouth, compared to a mere 20% when swallowed as in conventional supplementation. By chewing, rather than swallowing, the digestive system is bypassed where much of the active ingredients are metabolized and eliminated without ever being utilized.

Needing significantly less Hoodia to achieve equivalent results can save money in the long run. With the price of authentic high grade Hoodia still relatively high, needing "less" is "more" value for your money. Unfortunately Consumers have the idea that a certain dosage or a high number of milligrams of Hoodia are needed to be effective. To some degree this is true for conventional supplementation. 

But what is true for the supplements just does NOT translate to the gum products. This is likely to be a hurdle for marketing the Hoodia chewing gum. Incorrect assumptions about how much Hoodia is needed to be effective when using a delivery system such as chewing gum will have to be overcome.

How much Hoodia does it take when using gum to work? This is going to be best discovered on an individual basis through trial and experimentation. The Hoodia diet chewing gum is meant to be used intermittently throughout the day to help thwart food cravings. It can be chewed right before meals to reduce the overall mealtime food consumption. It can be taken after meals to deter those second helpings. It is conveniently chewed between meals anytime there is a need to curb the appetite.

The important thing to remember is, that what goes for the supplements, also goes for the Hoodia gum....the quality varies significantly and NOT ALL products are created equal.

Things to look for when buying the new Hoodia gum products:

Is there a published C.I.T.E.S Certificate for the same batch of Hoodia used?

Is there third party laboratory test results published for the same batch of Hoodia used?

Is there a significant amount of Hoodia in the gum , at least 500mg?

Was care taken in manufacturing to avoid heating the Hoodia to protect the p57 and other active ingredients?
