I've had the distinct pleasure of purchasing several pieces of ham radio gear that have reeked like an ashtray upon opening the shipping box. The nasty odor penetrates every piece of gear, manuals, and packing material. Believe me there is nothing much worse than grabbing a microphone to speak on it and the odor of cigarettes comes straight into my face. The sellers fail to mention that they are smokers and this is a HIDDEN element of the gear. No picture will tell you if the seller is a smoker.
The amount of cleaning required to get a radio back into ususable condition can vary from just a simple cleaning to full blown disassembly. I've had both extremes.
I've learned my lesson. I always ask before using the Buy it Now button.
