Beading Tips & Tricks : Colors Fading on Pearls and Stones

Question:
I have questions regarding dyed stones and pearls especially. I have a pair of earrings I made of magenta FWP. One side is now lighter. That gets me worried about buying more pearls. How can I wash out dye of these pearls and stones also, to get the truer color before I make them up.

Also what is the color of natural pearls, white, cream and black?

Answer:
Your question brings up an interesting point. Many stones will fade with exposure to sunlight. Since you did not mention which side of the peals faded, my guess is that the outer side which is more exposed to sunlight is the one that faded and the bleaching properties of the sun caused the problem. This can happen with a lot of things. There really isn't much that can be done to prevent it.

In our experience, the color treatment in pearls is permanent and does not wash out. There are some inexpensive stone that have been dyed and this dye can come off on your skin. We wash these stones in water before we use them in jewelry. You could add liquid soap and agitate them with your hands. Rinse them well and dry them and this should get the excess dye out of the beads. This way you will not have to worry about the color ending up on someone's neck.

Natural colored pearls are white, cream, gray, and black. The natural south sea pearls are black and are quite expensive. Most of the pearls on the market are grown on farms in China.
