Do NOT buy a Black Macbook new from Apple?
No, there's nothing actually wrong with black Macbooks, but wouldn't you rather have $100 plus a white Macbook that is exactly the same?
Let me fill in some back story.
It took Apple's iPod a while before it turned into THE monster product release of the new millennium. By the time the fifth generation of iPods were debuted in 2005, the iPod had already become a phenomenon. For the first time, iPods were available in two colors; White and Black.
It came as quite a surprise that the Black iPods were outselling the white ones by more than 2 to 1. I read reports that suggested it was more like 5 to 1. Apple, being just like any other corporation that is answerable to shareholders concerns regarding profits, saw this data and applied the knowledge to the release of the first line of Macbooks the next year.
The first line and every subsequent line of Macbooks included 3 configurations: a low end white model with a combo drive, a middle line white model with a super drive and a top of the line Black model with superdrive plus upgraded RAM and Hard Drive configurations. Prices are $1099, $1299 and $1499 respectively.
However, using the Apple store online custom configuration tools, a middle of the line white Macbook can be upgraded to the EXACT SAME specifications as the top of the line Black Macbook for $100. You can go to Apple's online store right now and try it for yourself.
You can save even MORE money by buying the the middle of the line Macbook and then buying and installing the upgrades yourself. Let's take an example from the current line of macbooks (written July 20 2008 - the current line is 2.4GHZ).
The middle of the line machine is a white 2.4ghz machine with 2GB memory and a 160GB hard drive. The ONLY difference between the top of the line and the middle of the line is the hard drive. For $100, you can have Apple install a 250gb drive into you macbook. Final cost: $1399 - and the ONLY difference between this upgraded white Macbook and the top of the line black Macbook is the color - and the price.
But take a quick search of eBay and you'll easily find a brand new 250GB laptop hard drive delivered for under $100. The macbook is beautifully designed to allow even an electronics moron to do this installation in just a few minutes. Installing your own hard drive (and memory too) WILL NOT void your warranty. These are considered, "Customer installable parts".
Another benefit of going this route is that you end up with a manufacturer warranty (usually three years) for the hard drive. The original apple warranty is good for only one year and since the hard drive is both the most important component and the one most prone to failure, having that extra warranty can be very valuable.
So now you have a white macbook that is exactly the same as the black macbook except the color. You also have a 160GB hard drive that you can sell on ebay for at least $60.
The end result: you now have the equivalent of the top of the line macbook PLUS and extended warranty for your hard drive and an extra $140 in your pocket.
This market phenomenon seems to hold true on eBay as well - black macbooks seems to sell for higher prices than white macbooks of equal configuration although the math is more convoluted.
Hope this helps...
