Baby Phat, Apple Bottoms & Dereon are three of the most successful urban clothing lines right now. They each have their own individual style. Which one is suits you best?
Urban clothing lines are very successful. Many celebrities create clothing lines that reflect their own personal style or to fill a void in the marketplace. Fashion conscious women have plenty of options.
Baby Phat
Let's start with Baby Phat because they were the first. Baby Phat is a spin off of the successful Phat Farm clothing line. Kimora Lee Simmons, fashion model and entrepreneur, developed Baby Phat in 1998.
The line was originally created by her husband Russell Simmons, but it was mostly t-shirts and boyish stuff in smaller sizes. Kimora took over and Baby Phat took off. Many celebrities have been seen rocking Baby Phat including, Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, and Carmen Electra.
These clothes are ultra feminine from the feline logo to the crystal embellishments on many of the designs. The designs tend to be bold and attention grabbing, reflective of Kimora Lee Simmons' personal style. The jeans fit true to size. Meaning, if you normally wear a size 7 in jeans then you will fit a size 7 in this brand as well.
Apple Bottoms
This is rap star Nelly's clothing line. It was launched in 2003. The most unique thing about these jeans are the fit. Apple Bottoms were created with shapely women in mind.
Many times a woman wears a certain size but has to purchase the next size up because there's not enough room in the rear and thighs. So, she will buy the next size up as a solution, but then another problem is created; gapping in the waist area. I have experienced this myself.
Nelly made sure that this would not be problem with Apple Bottoms. His opinion is "The clothes should fit the woman not the woman fit the clothes."
Apple Bottoms jeans have extra room in the hip, thigh and rear areas creating a great fit. This doesn't mean you have to be voluptuous to wear these jeans. Eva Pigford, winner of America's Next Top Model, did an ad campaign for Apple Bottoms and she joked that skinny girls can have apple bottoms too!
The signature jean has adorable apple shaped back pockets. Starting primarily as a denim line Apple Bottoms has now branched out into mini skirts, velour track suits, dresses and low cut tops. If you're curvy you will get a perfect fit every time. If you're more of an athletic shape or have a very thin build, you may want to get a size smaller than you usually wear.
What woman doesn't want to wear a size smaller? It's a win-win.
Dereon- A collection by House of Dereon
This line was developed by superstar Beyonce with her mother and sister, Tina and Solange Knowles in 2006. Solange is the spokesmodel for Dereon.
The clothing line bridges the gap between the high-end House Of Dereon clothing line and Beyonce's younger fans who may not be able to afford it. It's Hip Hot Couture. Dereon is a very good balance of streetwear and high-end.
The Fleur-de-lis signature logo is displayed on most of the line which includes jeans, tops, dresses, and footwear. Beyonce is known for being Bootylicious and caters to curvy women with Dereon.
The jeans have a nice fit no matter what size or shape you are. Again, if you have an athletic shape or very thin build go one size smaller.
