There are some very good deals on eBay for High Definition Receivers. I bought one for a very reasonable price. However, once I installed the unit I realized Directv would not authorize the use with the current access card.
It appears that the auctions for HD units without access cards do not get as much action as the auctions for HD units with the access card. It does not matter if you buy a unit with an access card, you will not be able to use it. Be prepared to spend $20 immediately when you call Directv's customer service department.
Directv's reason for not allowing use of the prior owner's access card is understandable:
1. Each card is the total access record to the prior owner's Directv account
2. If the prior owner's Directv account was delinquent, you would be liable for all charges
3. If the prior owner had ordered movies prior to the transfer, it would show up on your next bill
4. Prevents sales of "hot" units.
Directv will confirm the make, model and serial number of the unit before they proceed in authorizing the use of the unit. Just make sure you buy from someone who does not have a delinquent Directv account. If you do, the unit will be of no use to you.
