MY PET PEEVE!!!
If you are considering upgrading to a High Definition Direct TV System - PLEASE READ THIS!!!
In July 2007, my sweet wife decided that she wanted to record two programs while watching a third (now, that's not to unreasonable - is it?). At the time, we still had a standard definition Direct TV package with a 50" rear projection TV and a TiVo DVR. It all worked great.
I called Direct TV and they cherfully sent out an installer with a new standard DVR with only a $78.00 charge.
The installer disconnected the dish ground and never hooked it back up (why he did this in the first place, I don't know).
The installer then proceeded to cut the ground terminal off of the two DVR power cords (he said that a "hum" had developed in the stereo system).
When adding the coax cable for the new DVR, he shorted both A & B connectors on the back of the unit to ground.
The over all result of this exercise was that I wound up having to buy a new TV (of course I went with High Definition). That also ment that I had to get a new HD KaKu Dish and two new HR-21, HD DVRs.
The moral is:
Direct TV has a great High Definition entertainment package. Why anyone would be on cable is beyond me???
PLEASE, get a professional installer to do the installation. MAKE SURE that the dish and coax are properly grounded (unless you want a lightning strike to take out all of your expensive equpment)
I am a commercial & industrial Electrical Contractor, so I am very knowledgeable of electrical systems.
Since this escapade, I have extensively researched High Definition Systems.
I will be glad to answer any questions that you may have regarding Direct TV Systems.
If I don't know the answer, I will find out.
Of course, my time is limited, so please be patient with my response.
By the way, my wife has finally quit yelling at me last week.
