As a seller I have had a listing removed because it "looked to eBay" like excessive freight. It wasn't. It's the new USPS Priority rates! I could ship a 4 pound box to New York from California for $10.35 on May 13, 2007. How sad it was on May 14, 2007 that rate went up to $33.65 because it was larger than one cubic foot. An increase of 225%. I thought it was going to be bad going up to $13.45, so imagine my surprise when I see the calculator click off $33.65 ... an honest buyer turned me in for excessive freight. They thought it unbelievable too.
The rates prior to the 14th were based only on weight. Now my 12" x 12" x 20" package that weighed 3.8 pounds is subject to the new rate for Dimensional Weight Rate for Low-Density Pacels to Zones 5-8
To determine dimensional weight for any package over 1 cubic foot (12"x12"x12" or 1728 cubic inches)
- multiply the length x width x height to get your cubic inches, if that number is larger than 1728
- divide the total cubic inches by 194, round up to the next whole number to determine your Dimensional Weight
- look up on the Priority Rate chart based on the new Dimensional Rate, as if that were the acutual weight of the package
Thats where my package went out of control ... the new Dimensional Rate for my package was calculated:
12 x 12 x 20 = 2880
2880 / 194 = 14.845 making the new Dimesional Weight 15 pounds for my 4 pound, less than 2 cubic foot box
eBay advised me to start putting my weight and box measurements into my description. (Trust and Safety can not actually look up what I put into the calculator ... some sort of privacy issue) to avoid any future listing cancellations. I will do that! and hope you will too.... but beyond that ...
