The main thing to remember when doing up grades to your diesel truck wether it is a dodge ford or chevy is that you need to think about cause and effect.  for example if you have an automatic transmission what do you think the effect of adding 100+ horse power chip is going to be with no other upgrades. most likely transmission component failed.  because when you add that kinda power the torque converter becomes very inefficient and starts to cook things.  so it is important to protect the trans with a monitor system(gauge) which is passive and perhaps raise line pressure and or add a lock-up device for the torque converter and in most cases eventually upgrading the trans and torque converter intirely.

This systematic approach goes across the board.  now whats the effect if the motor cant breath. overtime of particular components or worse yet complete melt down remember fuel is heat without air.  Add fuel need more air, got air and fuel need to exhaust it efficiently.  try to stay away from inexpensive components.  Your truck is very complicated stick to reputable companies that spend tremendous time and money on research an development for each specific vehicle.  they are much more likely to give you a pleasant experience should some sort of issue pop up eventually.

My favorite question if i had more power whats going to happen to fuel economy. well you need to ask yourself howw much more power do i really need to pull my load up the hill safely and effectively. You mite be surprised a 40 hp chip stage 1 type air box and free flowing 4" exhaust system can make a world of difference on both performance and economy thats right up the hill faster safer and all the while getting better fuel milage and actual longer engine life.  How is this possible you ask.  well most chip manufacturers make adjustments to fueling and timing curves by either piggybacking or reprogramming your factory computer.  this makes the engine much more efficient, less wasted unburnt fuel and more power. unburnt fuel is dirty and causes heat which together break down engine oil faster not good. the air intake system and exhaust just make everything breath better and are usany good for another 15 -25 horses  and once again  this is do to better efficiency.

And now the big one almost any upgrade will void your factory warranty.  so you have to be careful and sometimes down write sneaky. maybe even bribe a service writer. policies differ from dealer to dealer but usually if you get red flagged by one it goes nation wide via computer so be careful as most parts for your medium duty pick up are expensive
