I am a full time cabinet installer and have used this tool on an EVERYDAY basis for the past two and a half years. First of all let me explain to you that this tool is not a MUST for the average joe. If you doing woodworking of any type, this impact driver coupled with a drill is a convenient and time saving combination.
Some of the positive aspect that you will notice right away is the ease of driving screws with little to no effort. Believe me when i say that once you use this impact driver, you will never go back to driving screws withyour drill. The compact size (6, 1/2 inches) is small enough to get into a 9 inch cabinet with room to spare. When choosing a drill, i would suggest getting a model that uses the same batteries,a DEWALT 14.4 volt of course. This makes everything much less complicated and cheaper in the long run. The light weight of the gun is much lighter than the 18 volt version of this tool. This translates into less arm fatigue when doing overhead work.
Some of the shortcomings that i have discovered about this impact driver is that after about two years of CONSTANT use, the impact mechanism seems to be getting 'sluggish'. This is due to one of two things: An aging armature or aging brushes. That being said, if you do not use this tool of an everyday basis then the tool should last you well past two years. This was kind of dissapointing to me beacuse i thought that it would have lasted for a longer period of time
Another thing to remember about this tool is that because the DEWALT batteries are NI-CAD, they should not be left idle for months at a time. NI-CAD batteries have a tendency to lose their ability to hold a charge if left sitting idle for too long.
Overall this dewalt 14.4 volt impact driver has given me a lot for the price that i have paid for it and has made me a lot of money in doing so. It has taken a lot of abuse over the last couple of years and never stopped working for me. So if you looking to buy an impact driver, this should be a serious choice that should be looked at.
Also lately i have been seeing combo sets by DEWALT where you can get the DRILL, Impact Wrench, And a free Dewalt bag for one low price. That should looked at to because of the battery compatibility issue.
I would give this IMPACT DRIVER a 4.5 out 5 stars
