Delmon Young - Dmitri Young's Brother Suspended!
On May 9th, AA minor league baseball player Delmon Young was suspended for 50 games without pay after he threw a bat that hit an umpire in the arm. The incident took place after a third strike call by a replacement umpire. Young had an extended word exchange with the ump over the call and was subsequently ejected from the game. After this call, Young walked away and flipped his bat underhand behind him. It struck the umpire's arm, causing Young to be suspended for the extended period of games.
Randy Mobley, president of the International League, handed down the suspension. It is the longest penalty in the 123-year history of the organization, making it the most severe by default as well. The ruling also requires Young to serve 50 hours of community service and to lose about $145,000 in pay during the suspension.
Young apologized after the incident immediately, saying he was sorry for his actions and that he thought the ruling was fair. As well, he hoped to put his behavior behind him and that he hadn't done any damage to the team's reputation. Judges for the league say that Young's actions were not acceptable and that he would have been suspended longer, but they couldn't determine whether or not he threw the bat intending to hit the umpire.
The younger brother of Detroit baseball star Dmitri Young, Delmon Young shows promise with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays AA team. He is a young player, only 20 years old, and has been reprimanded before. Young had to sit out three games last year after bumping the chest of umpire Jeff Latter.
