The Postal Service measures First-Class Mail® letter and package service performance measuring the time it takes from deposit of mail into a collection box or post office lobby chute until its delivery to a home or business. Actual transit time is then compared against First-Class Mail® service standards.The percentages below are from the USPS website for Q1 09 ending 3/31.

 It is possible that if you give your item to a carrier, on route, additional time may be needed in the estimate and are not included in the numbers.  Carriers may not get the package or letter back to the office by the time for the daily pick up, leading to one additional day before the item is scanned and in route to the destination.       

Note: % On-Time  for the following districts for packages using Delivery Confirmation as compared to the standards set for the delivery destination from the zone you ship from.  The percentages are  for 1-Day, 2-Day, 3-5 Day delivery standards for distance.

As you can see, 1-day delivery standard is the highest percentage on time. Typically those items within one day of mailing address are on time this percentages of time.  Similarly, you can see that letters and packages 3 - 5 days estimated delivery, which is typically cross-country for letters, are on time to these districts this percentage of time. 

These numbers, the date your package is in the system, and if you use the Delivery Confirmation, may explain why some packages take a longer time to reach your customers.
