What is the difference between 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch?

When it comes to the USPS, and First Class Mail with Delivery Confirmation, the difference is $3.28!

Why?

Well, the USPS rules state that packages traveling First Class Mail with Delivery Confirmation MUST be at least ¾ inch thick, somewhere on the package.  If the package does not “measure up” it will get bumped up to Priority Mail and the recipient will be charged the difference.

  • Labels printed via PayPal always have Delivery Confirmation

  • Delivery Confirmation on First Class shipping requires 3/4 inch thickness

  • First Class without Delivery Confirmation does NOT require the 3/4 inch thickness

Customer Satisfaction

Now, there are probably faster ways to lose repeat customers, and receive negative feedback, but this would be a high ranking reason.  My recommendations are these:

  • Wrap your item in a single layer of bubble wrap before slipping it into the poly mailer.

  • Or, place one or two packing "peanuts" into the poly mailer

  • Measure the thickness BEFORE dropping it into the mail

Using these tips will ensure your item is bulky enough to pass the ¾ inch rule without adding much weight.  10 cents of bubble wrap is well worth the savings of money and your reputation as a seller.

As a customer, I might absolutely love the items I received and I might have been HAPPY to pay the $3.28 to the seller, because the product was well worth the additional cost.  It just seems wrong to give it to the USPS!!!

Sellers Take Note

Though many, many items which do no measure up to the USPS 3/4 inch thickness requirement are delivered without being stamped as "Postage Due," why risk your reputation by taking a chance that yours will be the one selected for that dreaded stamp?  Do yourself and your customers a favor. Take that extra minute to ensure the thickness of the package and then sit back and wait for the positive feedback to roll in!
