Extremely greasy skins, such as beaver or raccoon, should first be degreased before completing the tanning process. Small skins can be soaked in white (unleaded) gasoline. Large skins can be degreased by sprinkling the degreaser on both sides of the hide. Sprinkle sawdust over both sides and work it into the surfaces. The sawdust absorbs the grease and degreaser. Make sure that you do this outside or in a well-ventilated areas away from any open flames or pilot lights. An easier method of degreasing is with Rittel's Degreaser.

Hang the degreased skins outside to allow them to dry. Use a small stick or spatula to beat the sawdust out of the skins. The furs should be fluffed at this time. Sprinkle borax over the furs, and then use a stick or spatula to beat out the materials. Once all materials are removed from the skins, rinse them in clean, cool water ans squeeze the skin to remove excess water and partially dry it.
