Mary B Decorative Art The use of floor cloths as painted decorative floor coverings began in the early 18th century. They began to be used in the United States as early at the Revolutionary War. Floor cloths are enjoying a resurgence because of the increased use of wood floors. They offer a unique and practical decorating statement and are easily maintained.
Modern floor cloths are a unique way to add a piece of art to your room. They will jazz up your current décor, make a great conversation piece and yes, you can walk all over them. Floor cloths are the design solution to all of your flooring needs. They can be adapted to any style of home, from traditional to contemporary, and easily made to fit into any space. Size, shape, color and pattern can vary. Most shown here are 2' x 3', but can be ordered in any size with a design to fit your style. The vinyl flooring can be cut into endless shapes to fit the design.
Each floor cloth is made with attention to every detail, using quality acrylic paints, beginning with heavyweight vinyl flooring which is basecoated with two or more primer coats, the background color is painted next, then the design is painted on. A minimum of five coats of clear, non-yellowing varnish is then applied to finish the floor cloth. This process is labor and time-intensive, however, the finished piece is an original work of art. Each is signed and no two pieces are ever identical. Stencils are not used in my work.
Tableware is also available in many different designs, including full-size tablemats or runners, placemats and coasters. The same protective coating is applied, making them easily wiped up. They make wonderful gifts and can go from the dining room to the patio. Examples of other uses for the smaller pieces are on a vanity under perfume bottles, as a potted plant protector, a mousepad, a special mat for your pet's food bowls.
CLEANING:
Your piece of art should be cleaned as necessary with mild soap (dish soap works well) and warm water. Use a soft rag, sponge or mop and dry with a towel when finished. Harsh cleaners and abrasives should be avoided as they will harm the finish and can reduce the life of your floor cloth. The edges may become mildly worn, which adds to the uniqueness of your floor art. Once or twice a year, re-apply a coat of clear non-yellowing varnish will prolong the lift of your floor art, and enhance the appearance as well.
For use under a kitchen or dining table, and other pieces of furniture, protect your floor cloth from furniture leg imprints or damage with felt or glide caps on the feet of chairs or furniture legs.
Unlike canvas cloths, these floor cloths will lie smooth and flat and edges do not curl. They also don't crack or wear poorly as canvas commonly will. These cloths are recommended for hard wood, tile and linoleum floors. It is recommended that a waffle weave rug protector be placed beneath the floor cloth to prevent slipping, as you would for any area rug. Please don't use as a bath mat, place on another rug, or use on stairs. They are water-resistant, but excessive or standing water can cause damage.
