It's reletively easy to select toys for your child but buying art for a child can be a bit more trying.

Whether decorating a newborn's nursery or a teenager's hangout, eBay offers the opportunity to find original art for every taste and pocketbook.

This guide is written to help you select works of art for your child's room. A wonderful selection of  original watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, and three dimensional art can be found by searching SELF REPRESENTING ARTISTS. Artists are selling directly from their studios so the prices are lower than when found in a gallery or shop.

Here are a few good tips for searching:

  • Is there a theme for your child's room?  Search the theme under Self Representing Artists. Be certain to search anything that is related to the theme. For instance, a nautical theme might include searches for boats, ships, lighthouse, fish, fishing, lobster, crab, seascapes, ocean, etc.  A woodland theme would include squirrels, mice, owls, crows, trees, mushrooms, ferns, moose, deer, etc.
  • What about color? For YELLOW, you might search that color as well as gold. Also, search for objects you expect to be yellow such as "gold finch" or "buttercup". Pink might be found under fairies.
  • SELECT work with your child. You might consider pre-selecting by "watching this item" and reviewing your selection with your child prior to making a purchase.
  • Your teenagers might enjoy themes you don't appreciate! Discuss possibilities and ask your teen to select items by "watching this item" and review those objects with your teen.

WHAT DO SELF REPRESENTING ARTISTS MAKE?

Just about anything you can think of! However, there are a few areas where the prices are just right and the sizes are small. Small works can be grouped together for big impact. When a child grows out of  his/her choices, you can easily change the collection when it's low priced.

ACEOs Art Cards Editions and Originals otherwise known as ATCs (artist trading cards), are 2.5" X 3.5". The subjects are varied as are the prices, .99 to $50 each. Wonderful artists, some self taught, others professional.

ART SQUARED. This group of artists makes work 4"X4" to 14" X14", thus, squared. Like the ATC, the prices are very good.

Folk Art. Under this category, you may find one of a kind (ooak) dolls for play or display; and a variety of other great objects for a child's room.

Look for Self Representing Artists who make sculpture. Something whimsical might be a real boost to the room.

BE CERTAIN TO BUY ITEMS THAT ARE AGE APPROPRIATE. Don't let small children play with altered objects or artist made dolls as they may not be safe.
