Decorating and interior design has become "trendy" with all the shows on HGTV lately. You can learn to do all those faux paintings, wallpapering, and sewing techniques by watching just a few programs. I have tried all forms of decorating, Victorian, Art Deco, Country, French Country, Primitive, and even Contemporary. What style really works? It all depends on your house and your taste! I find looking at how things in magazines are placed on the tables and mantles really gives that decorator feeling. Just look in any given magazine, you will see a bedside table, what is on the table? A vase with flowers and a picture frame, or maybe a clock? Usually no more than three or four things at the most. When you decide you are going to redecorate your bedroom, and you look in the magazines for ideas, look at the details. Notice the window treatments may have fringe, the mirrors have glamourous mouldings, there may be three layers of material on the round bedside table, one with plaid, and one floral to match the drapes. It is all the little details without the clutter that provides that decorator look. When I made curtains for my sitting room I took fringe from a chair throw and attached it to my curtains.. I have seen a lot of blue and white plates used by decorators in dining rooms. Achieve the same designer look by noticing how and where they are placed! Too many times we spend too much for an expensive item and find out "it doesnt look good in my house" and we dont understand why. It looked good in the magazine. This is when you need to analyze the other objects surrounding its precense. Are the other items overbearing? Is the lamp taking over the space? are the flowers too high? I cant see my clock now! Rethnking placement of objects will help you acheieve that decorator look and I think they are right when they say "Less is more"!
