Family rooms in today's homes are more and more frequently referred to as "Living Rooms".  They are the most popular and most used rooms in the house.  Because of the importance of this room, care should be used to make sure it suites the whole family's needs.

The main purpose of the family room should be comfort, as this is here the whole family can gather to relax and unwind.

When choosing furnishing for this room, casual, long-wearing furniture is a smart choice, particularly if you have children or pets.  First you should determine who will be using this room and what they will be using it for.  One person may be reading a magazine while two others watch TV and a third does homework.

The size and shape of your family room will help determine the lay-out of the room.  It should be arranged so that it feels open and inviting, but with enough seating for every member of the family.

The TV or Entertainment Center is usually the focal point of the room.  Comfort should be a primary concern when selecting the furniture since you will be relaxing in this room everyday.

Accessory items can greatly enhance any room or display.  Consider adding candles and lamps for atmosphere and air fresheners to create a pleasant scent.  Display art to show off your interest, taste and talent if you are an artist yourself.  Curios and display cases are terrific for showcasing collections, figurines and other home decor items.

Durability should also be a factor in selecting the furniture.  A strong hardwood frame and a durable fabric will keep your furniture looking like new longer.  It is important to think about your furnishing purchases carefully:

  • How is your new purchase (fabric, paint, chair, lamp, etc.) going to fit into the already existing scheme?
  • What kind of "feel" do you want a room to have (cozy, formal, intimate, casual, etc.)?
  • What are your favorite colors?
  • What style(s) do you like and how will they mix and match?
  • Do you plan on entertaining?

The most beautifully decorated homes are the result of careful thought and decision making.  Don't skip this important process in your decorating scheme.

Above all, have fun.  There is no right or wrong way to decorate your home.  There is only your own, unique, individual style!  Make the most of  it and don't be afraid to experiment and try new things.
