I got my first Dawn doll in 1970, and started collecting them about 6 years ago. Dawn was made by the Topper Toy Co. and was made/sold between 1970 and around 1974. She was advertised as "the most beautiful doll in the world" and competed with Barbie in the hearts of little girls and the wallets of their parents. She was comparatively cheaper to buy and sets of beautiful outfits could be bought on the side. At 6 1/2 inches tall, she transported easily, and had the unique quality of being able to "walk" with the aid of the girl who played with her. The original Dawn has golden blonde, long, straight hair. She has a twist'n'turn waist and her knees bend like Barbies. Vintage Dawn dolls are easily bought online, although their "peak" years of availability seem to be waning. Nearly all vintage Dawns suffer from "green knee", a discoloration from the brass rivets inside the leg that hold the knee joint together. Look for a doll that is in relatively good condition. Dirty dolls with wild hair can be a cheaper buy and then cleaned, but only for those who are willing to do a little work. Other dolls in the line are; Angie with long dark hair, Glori a redhead, Longlocks, Van an A.A. boy, Gary Dawn's boyfriend, Dinah a pale blonde, Denise and others. Package outfits MOC (mint on card) go for more than loose outfits. When buying loose clothing be ready to sew a snap on or wash an item or two. Dawn doll collecting is a fun hobby that reconnects many boomers with their childhood, and can also be seen as an investment. The dolls are sure to grow in value over time as they are no longer produced. Checkerboard Toys re-issued Dawn a few years ago, but had a limited run. These dolls are also available on ebay, many MIP (mint in package). Dawn collectors even gather once yearly at a "convention". Be sure to join the yahoo group for Dawn collectors. They can share info about collecting, the convention, and other activities.
