David Elsewhere A Guide to the Best Dancer Ever
David Elsewhere (born David Bernal) is famous for a type of dancing called "popping," which consists of a dancer contracting his or her muscles in a way that causes the body to jerk and flow in a strange, mesmerizing manner. The style first evolved in the late 1970s in Southern California, when a group called the Electric Boogaloos popularized it on the TV show "Soul Train."
A skilled pop dancer like David Elsewhere can make the body appear to move like liquid. Born in 1979, Elsewhere grew up in Santa Ana, California and first came to prominence in 2001 following a performance at a Korean-American talent show called Kollaboration, in which he revived many moves from popping and other similar dance styles.
The talent show tape was posted on the Internet, where it gained wide circulation and was downloaded by users all over the world. David Elsewhere became so popular that major corporations like Volkswagen, Heineken, Pepsi, Apple iPod, and others tapped him to appear in their commercials. One commercial in particular, for the Volkswagen Golf, featured Elsewhere recreating the scene from the film Singin' in the Rain. The commercial became a hit on the Internet.
David Elsewhere says that his stage name refers to the sense of mental disconnection he feels while dancing, and also to the fact that he is always trying to push his style to the next level. David Elsewhere is part of a four-person dance group called Detours that also includes Kujo, Rawbzilla, and Midus.
