While I have been selling a broad spectrum of vintage photographs, of late I have concentrated more on images, CDVs and tintypes, from the Civil Era of the 1860s.  And of late I have taken flak from another user who is a self-proclaimed authority on the civil War and, now, on nineteenth century clothing.  He has caused the recent removal of two of my listings, the last within two hours of his email to me - apparently he has become the guru of the subject as for as eBay is concerned.  In the last case I had a nice image of two small boys in Zouave outfits with Kepis.  No back mark, but the albumen photograph was mounted on Bristol board which was only used by photographers in the 1860s.  In addition, the image itself, with the quality and with the photographer's accessories, was clearly from the 1860s.  But this other user alleged that the SHOES the boys were wearing were not made until the 1890s.  And apparently this was sufficient for eBay not only to remove the item but to require me to take their tutorial on prohibited items.  If this other user had been correct as to the shoes then clearly the image would have had to date from the 1890s.  As the late authority on carte de visites, William C. Darrah, has noted it is fairly easy to date all CDVs with just a few years, primarily based on the mounts which in this case clearly pointed to the 1860s.  In which case this supposed authority on nineteenth century clothing is discredited.  But tell that to eBay, or rather, say your breath.  As we all know users cannot speak directly with the Trust Department, and with good reason - they often cannot support their actions.  In the case of the CDV of the two boys I made no claims as to the style of the outfits other than the Zouave design.  I did mention, which was fact, it came from a Mississippi family album.   In the other case I listed a CDV of an identified young man as photographed in Washington D. C. toward the end of the war as it had a revenue stamp.  He had  signed on the verso., inscribing his image to a girl, likely his girlfriend.  There were twelve Union soldiers with his name including middle initial, so I stated in the listing that he  PROBABLY was or had been a soldier.  Again, this same other user emailed me that this was wrong, and again almost immediately the listing was canceled.  I should, in all fairness, note that this other user applies the rank of "colonel" to all his communications.  Not that he is a retired officer, but rather that he holds that rank in a re-enactors'  unit.  As an old professor of mine in graduate school (where I acquired a title I do not use) he is stretching a long bow.  It is important that sellers be held to account for their statements.  And, as in these two cases, I made my argument to eBay, again with no avail.  After all, we know that the socalled Trust Department is not riddled with experts on anything.  Just as they rely on persons, such as this other user, to report alleged violation they then rely on these same individuals as experts.  A rather dangerous proposition.
