I have been asked many times about DVD Drives. Many people are confused about which DVD Drives can write to a disk. The main difference is that a DVD-ROM drive can only read data, (such as watching a DVD movie). A DVD Burner can write to a disk. There are different formats such as +, - or both. A + drive can only read or write to a + disk, same for the - format. There are DVD Drives now that can use double layer disks. These disk hold much more data on them. New DVD Drives can also burn to CDR and CDRW disks, ( for example saving music). All DVD Burners have different speeds, such as 8x, 12x, 16x and so on. This determines how fast the drive will transfer data to the disk. Make sure the drive your interested in has a front bezel that matches the color of the front of your PC. A drive that is OEM usally comes with only the drive, there are no cables, screws and software included. And last, the new DVD Burners sold today can replace the current older drive you are using now, and perform all the functions in one drive. This is a picture of a DVD Burner that has it all, + or - read/write, 16x, double layer, 3 color bezels and software:
