I'll get straight to the point. eBay has changed their rules recently, leaving a lot of people with questions. It used to be that you simply list your items up and they appear in the search results according to how much time they have left. Unfortunately, it is not like this anymore. Now, they appear based on your "search standing." Your search standing is calculated by eBay based on your feedback ratings and some other information that needs further explanation.
If you have not accumulated lots of feedback consider Creating a new eBay account. Whether you are just starting to sell or have been selling for a while, you HAVE to get yourself to "raised" standing no matter what - this will literally mean up to thousands of dollars a day for you! It’s THAT important. Whether you have an account already that you use for selling or not, what you need to do is make a new account on eBay because it will automatically be raised from the get-go. From here on, you need to make sure that your account status stays raised! After you receive 10 feedback ratings (as a seller), eBay uses your Detailed Seller Ratings from the last 30 days to determine in what position your ads will appear. Selling strategy is covered below,but this is the basic foundation of your success as an eBay seller. Unless you can get inventory for like 50% below market value like Wal-Mart, you will need to have another advantage over your competition.
Run One-Day Auctions with a Buy-It-Now Price.
Ok, now that we have the most important base covered - how to stay at the top of the search results all the time - let’s get to selling. One of the best strategies I have learned is to run One-Day Auctions with a Buy It Now price at the same time. I.E.: opening auction price of $154.99 with a buy it now price of $159.99.

Also, all my listings have FREE SHIPPING to get an EVEN higher search standing (eBay favors free shipping and gives you a higher search standing if you offer it). To cover for the cost of the free shipping, consider raising the price of the auction a bit, but since you are on top of the searches ALL day long you have a monster sell-through rate even at the higher price!
Use Lots of Keywords in Your Auction Title.
When making your listings, try to use as many keywords in the title as possible. It’s very easy to get the keywords to use. All you need to do is search the item you are selling, let’s say iPod, and check the top searches you see right off the bat. Those are the listings that are keyword-rich. Use the keywords that they used to show up all the way at the top.
Offer (and most importantly, Advertise) a Return Policy.
Do your best to make the listing nice but it doesn’t have to be anything special. ALWAYS MENTION A GUARANTEE AND A RETURN POLICY, preferably one for 30 days! This will help you sell way above market price because most people like to be assured that they are protected in case they don’t like their item and want to return it. Think about it: if you were looking to buy a used electronic on eBay and you found two that were seemingly the same except one seller is offering it as-is/no refunds for $100 and the other is offering it with a 30-day money back guarantee for $115, which are you going to go with? Write your return policy and guarantee somewhere in the beginning so they know right away that they are in good hands and don’t have to worry about buying from you because they can return if they don’t like it. This tip alone has helped me create a ton more sales.
Stay in Touch With Your Customer.
The DSR (Detailed Seller Rating) is your most important asset because it dictates whether you are on top of the search standing or not. Do WHATEVER it takes to get all 5 stars. What I do is when someone makes a purchase, I have eBay automatically email them thanking them and then send a few more emails. Send one when the item ships and another a few days later ASKING for positive feedback and 5 star ratings in each DSR field! This works like you wouldn’t believe! Make sure to tell them to email you first before leaving feedback if there is a problem. Sometimes you get an angry customer that will threaten you with negative feedback or one star ratings in each field, do ANYTHING you can to avoid that, (even if it means losing some money) because in the long run you will make so much more money from keeping your DSRs up, so those few dollars won’t matter.
It’s all about exposure on eBay. People come ready to buy - you need to give them a good reason to buy from YOU. You will be seen by as many people as possible everyday because ALL your One-Day Auctions/Buy It Now’s are always on top of the searches and you offer free shipping. By offering a great guarantee and return policy, you will justify your above-market price and people will have no problem paying it because to them it’s worth knowing that they are protected and that kind of peace of mind is worth the few extra bucks to any consumer. Since you have great post sale communication you will always get positive feedback and 5 star ratings and continue this great cycle of success.
