I wanted to take to time to fill you in on just one of the many credit card scams currently being run on ebay. Ok heres how it works.... A person who has the stolen credit card or credit card number list a common high dollar item for sell on ebay, this auction looks like any other but this seller really doesn`t have the item on hand that they are listing. Once you bid and win this auction the seller will require you to pay for this item by personal check or money order. Once the seller has received your payment they use the stolen credit card to order your item through a major retailer. The seller gives the retailer your ship to address so they have no ties to the transaction. The major retailer then ships the item to your address and the credit card scammer is now free and clear. You now have your item and they have your money and you don`t even know you have just become a victim. But here is what can happen.... If at the time this seller goes to use the stolen credit card and the major retailer gets a report of this stolen credit card the transaction will not go through and you will be out your money and the item that you thought you just paid for. But beware even if the transaction does manage to slip through the credit crad fraud system and the major retailer ships the item to you, this is not your item, it is stolen and now you have just become part of this fraud circle. Since the seller has used the ordering information of the person with the stolen credit card and given your address as the ship to person the seller has no ties to this transaction and now you are the one with the stolen item. So once it is discovered that this credit card was used to commit fraud. The major retailer now has you information and can now take legal action to recover the item that was shipped to you. In most cases if you return the item to the retailer no action will be taken against you as you are also a victim in this scam. Here is what to look for and how to avoid becomming a victim. The seller will not have very many feedback as they open and close these ebay accounts all the time to avoid getting caught. The seller will only accept personal checks or money orders. this way they can cash your money order or check before anyone even knows whats going on. The seller will have you mail your payment to a differen`t address from what they have listed in their ebay contact information as the one that they have listed with ebay is a fake. Also if and when you receive the item you will see that it didn`t come from either of these addresses. I have been a seller on ebay for over 8 years now and I have seen just about every scam come and go. This credit card scam is very hard to spot as 99% of the time you don`t even know that you were just scammed untill its too late. Here is what happened to me.... I normally don`t buy from sellers with low feedback ratings or ones that only accept money order and checks but it seemed like such a good deal and worth the risk. But beware thats what these people are waiting for someone just like yourself willing to take a risk, and this is what I did. I won a $200.00 item for $70.00 thinking I just got a great deal I mailed the seller a personal check. The check I mailed went to a person in NJ. I asked the seller to please email me the tracking information and now I had nothing to do but wait. After a week I emailed the seller asking the seller to confirm the shipping date of this item. I was told that the item would ship in a couple days. Well after a couple days I still did not receive any tracking information from this seller, so I requested thier contact information. Once ebay sent it to me I found that it was differen`t from the person that I had made the check out to as the contact information was for someone in CT.. I even tried to contact this person by phone but the phone number listed was also invalid. So by the time I discovered that something was not right here I contacted my bank and as I had figured my check had already gone through. So now I contact ebay and file a item not received claim. Then the seller contacts me and states that my item was returned to them as undeliverable (good excuse) they ask for my correct shipping information witch is no different from what they aready have but I send it to them again anyway. The following day this seller sends me a email with a UPS tracking number and when I look it up on the UPS site it show that a item is comming from GA. to my address. A few days latter I receive the item that I had won on ebay, but it came from a major retailer and the invoice inside listed a person in Ca. as the person placing the order and me as the ship to person. The invoice listed the cost of the item at $200.00 and not the $70.00 as I had paid. The person in Ca. is the one that had thier credit card stolen and charged $200.00 for this item. And I was the one that had the stolen item shipped to. I contacted the retailer and alerted them of what had just happened and I was told to return the item to them to avoid any legal action. So now I am out my money that I paid and don`t have the item that I thought I had won. And ebay can`t/won`t do anything about it as it wasn`t paid for via thier system (paypal). I hope that my $70.00 loss and the above information can keep others from falling victim to the same scam. But BEWARE this is just one of many scams being run on ebay.
