Every baby at some point will get a diaper rash...its unavoidable.  There are many things you can do to get rid of the rash FAST.

Start by making it a habit to wash your baby's bottom after each bowel movement under running water with a mild baby soap.  I would do that especially in the early months and my daughter never got a rash unless she was sick with diarrhea.  Every time she would go #2 I would wipe her clean with wipes then take her nakey bootey to the sink and stick her bottom under running water while cleaning with soap.

My first born had trouble with rashes: this is how I became a Rash Expert.

And you say, "Listen lady, My baby has a rash right now... I need to know what to do." ok ok ok.

Your baby has a rash: Its red: Its swollen: Its raw

Your baby is crying and your tired.

Too bad.. this takes work from now on if you want to cure that rash!

Bath Rash CURE

Every diaper change.... EVERY ONE...even pee pee....Take the baby to the bath.

In the bath, the most effective method I've used is baking soda

I just sprinkle it all over the bath... and whooosh it around with my hand, stick the baby in and let them sit until they are bored. At least 5 minutes... at the most 20 minutes.  This helps sooo much.

You don't have baking soda on hand?

Just run some baby wash under the faucet and let the tub bubble up a little and let baby play in the tub for the same amount of time. Or use oatmeal.

If you don't have time for a bath: Sink Time

Run the baby's bottom under the faucet and use something light... like Aveeno w/ Oatmeal Wash for Baby. The oatmeal really help's baby's skin.

Use your hand to wash baby's bottom.... a Rag or anything else is tooo Rough.

The BLOWDRYER

 I know this sounds insane... but when my son had a diaper rash.. everytime he got out of the bath or after I wiped him, I had a blowdryer hooked up next to the changing table... or bed.. whichever. I put the setting on low and blow-dryed his bottom.

Make sure the setting is LOW and the heat is LOW and not hot at all.  Make sure you jiggle and move the blowdryer so the warm air doesnt stay in one place b/c it will burn your baby even if the temperature is low.  Do NOT put the blowdryer close to your baby's skin.

The whole point is to get the air flowing to the bottom to help the skin  heal and completly dry the bottom.

Let baby have "Nakey_Time"  Put a large trash bag on floor. Cover the trash bag with an Even Larger Baby blanket so as the baby will not see the trash bag... (it has to be covered all the way for safety's sake).  Lay the baby on the floor for play time to "air out" the booty.

DO NOT PUT DIAPER RASH CREAM ON A BOTTOM THATS NOT DRY

This is a huge mistake.

My mother in law once wiped my baby's bottom. (he had a diaper rash.) and without even drying, she smothered cream all over him.  She got an earful that day... and never made that mistake again.

When the bottom is not completely dry, you are apply diaper rash cream that will initially SEAL in the the moisture on the skin and make the diaper rash WORSE.  That's why I use the blowdryer before applying diaper rash cream.

Dont forget to dry those baby fat creases too!

Rash Cream

Please parents, do not buy a cheapo rash cream.  And be sensitive to your baby's skin needs.... My baby is sensitive to DESITIN... it burns her skin. I use AVEENO with oatmeal... and it works very well.

Sometimes you will need a prescription from your doctor... especially if the rash gets worse and worse... usually that is caused from Yeast... that has to have an antifungal medication.  I've found that some diaper rashes do well with a prescription called, "nystatin" which your doctor can call the pharmacy for you and instead of you making a trip to the doctor and then the pharmacy... you can just go straight to your pharmacy.  This is how you use the nystatin with success if you do have it. 

1. Dry bottom completely

2. Apply Nystatin first and then the Diaper Rash Cream of your choice.

Or

2. Mix Nystatin and the Cream of your Choice in your palm and apply to baby's bottom.

Please don't use powder... this can be dangerous for baby's lungs and may make the rash Worse.

Do not use Cheap Diapers

For some reason, anytime I have ever bought diapers b/c they were on sale or a good price, my baby got a rash. Use diapers that suit your baby. If your baby's skin gets a rash shortly after a new Brand of Diaper... DONT USE IT AGAIN... no matter how much money you saved... your baby is more important. Usually those cheapy diapers do not pull moisture away from baby's skin as effectively as a better brand would.

I personally, with two kids have found the best diapers for my children are Pampers Cruisers / Swaddlers for size 1-2.  I won't change them for nothing.  Walmart has the cheapest prices.. and if you have a coupon you will not find that price anywhere else.
