This guide will address only the DEUTSCH-NEUGUINEA 1906 clasp which was worn on the bronze combatant version of the Kolonialdenkmünze. The Imperial German Colonial Medal (Kolonialdenkmünze) was established by Kaiser Wilhelm II on 13 June 1912 with revisions on 17 February 1914.  The medal with clasps was awarded retroactively.  The clasp  DEUTSCH-NEUGUINEA 1906 was awarded for 3 different actions:

  • May 1906:  Actions in the volcanic Kananitu (Kananatu) mountains area of Papua New Guinea.  This was a rather small series of actions made up of a series of patrols, each led by a German Polizeimeister (Police Sergeant) who were attempting to capture and punish bandits that were attacking the outlying coastal plantations.  There were some casualties to the natives and mainly injuries to the Police Troops.  A man serving in the Kananitu Mountains area could not have participated in the Tagueroi village action.  It's interesting to note that evidence indicates that some non-combatant (steel) Imperial German Colonial Medals without clasp were awarded for this action.
  • May 1906:  Actions near the village of Tagueroi. A man serving in the Tagueroi village area could not have participated in the actions in the Kananitu Mountains.  A Police Troop detachment with 2 German Polizeimeisters (Police Sergeants) and approximately 25 to 40 Police Troops went to Taqueroi to suppress banditry by the citizens.  There were casualties to the natives.
  • September 1906:  Actions near the village of Tsiwo.  A Police Troop detachment with at least 2 German Polizeimeisters (Police Sergeants) and approximately 25 to 50 Police Troops went to Tsiwo to suppress banditry and general lawlessness by the citizens.  There were casualties to the natives.  This village seems to have vanished or was renamed after WWI.

DEUTSCH-NEUGUINEA 1906

This clasp was awarded only to Imperial German Colonial Police Troops.  There appears to be fewer than 100 men authorized this clasp (in all categories) and possibly only 1/3 to 1/4 received it in 1912. While the medal is somewhat rare, these bronze clasps are very rare.  As of March 2007, this bronze clasp is only known in one officially issued type:  same width as the ribbon, wide lettering, flat back, pebbled background and with soldered sharp flat prong backs.   This is not to say that another type wasn't officially issued as well but that only this one type has been verified.

  • In 1987, a single clasp was sold in Germany for DM 125
  • In 1998, a single clasp was offered in Germany for €175+
  • In 1999, a single clasp was sold in Germany for €169
  • In January 2008, a single clasp was offered in Hamburg, Germany for €200

Copies and forgeries of this clasp exist - mainly cast.  My standing advice for purchasing this clasp is:  Buy only from a dealer who specializes in Imperial German medals and will offer a 100% guarantee.  If you found this guide helpful, a Yes vote is appreciated.  This will help me gauge the level of interest in this and similar topics for further guides.  For your convenience, other associated guides can be found at:  http://reviews.ebay.com/Imperial-German-Medal-Guides-Index_W0QQugidZ10000000002386112 and/or  http://reviews.ebay.com/Imperial-German-Colonial-Medal-DEUTSCH-NEUGUINEA_W0QQugidZ10000000002379852.  Please visit my blog (http://blogs.ebay.com/tsa-li) and/or guides for further information.  Thank you for your visit!
