Before you purchase a Dell Widescreen LCD monitor, read it over.
There are two types of LCD's that Dell produces: an economy model, geared for home users and non-enthusiasts "budget monitor", and a more expensive "deluxe" model, for professionals, enthusiasts and gamers. The looks of the monitors are almost identical, both are widescreen, both are 20inches, both have the same style of stand and casing; but the hardware in them is incredibly different.
2007WFP = GOOD
- 8 bit Display
- DVI, VGA, Composite, S-Video, USB
- 6 bit Display
- DVI and VGA
2007WFP ($360 20" Widescreen) vs E207WFP ($270 20" Widescreen)
What?! How is this possible? These are practically the same!! NO, THEY ARE NOT. The 2007WFP comes in an 8bit panel, the E207WFP comes in a 6bit panel. Also along with the incredible decrease in LCD quality, there is a difference in input jacks. In the back of the 2007WFP there are composite, svideo, DVI, VGA,USB and more. On the E207WFP there is only DVI and VGA. Don't be tricked into buying the cheaper one thinking it is the same quality, it is not. Described below is how the 8bit panel destroys the 6bit panel in performance.
8 bit LCD vs 6 bit LCD
Here is where it gets tricky. 8 bit displays can display 16.7 million colors without any tricks, meaning that 1 pixel can display any color in that 16.7mil range. 6 bit displays can only theoretically display 262,144 colors. This obviously wouldn't make a great viewing experience. But, what manufacturers did to improve this is they made a way to trick your eye into seeing more colors by blending three pixels together to make a unique color, this overlapping can produce 16.2 million "colors". When you look at the monitor, you will think you are seeing a certain color, but you are actually seeing an illusion of three pixels blurring together.
GRADIENTS and PICTURES on an 8bit vs 6bit
Now, since the 8 bit has a wider natural range, it can display such things as gradients and vivid photographs with crisp smooth quality where as the 6 bit display will show banding. Banding is an effect where if a gradient is on screen, it will look striped vertically or horizontally. It should be smooth across the entire gradient, but with the very limited color possibilities, the 6 bit panel has to stripe its gradients.
Auctions will NOT SAY THESE DIFFERENCES they will only give you a model number. So before you buy, re-think what you are wanting. If you just want a display to check email and browse the web, the E207WFP is just for you. However, if you are a photographer, artist, gamer, enthusiast, entertainment junky, movie freak or anyone who enjoys good quality, the 2007WFP is the top choice.
