I was recently a victim of a phishing scam.  Luckily for me all that the "phishermen" got was a bunch of "smell ya later" notes.

One day I tried to log into eBay by using my bookmark in my favorites. I noticed that the eBay log-in page took a bit longer. I clicked on "sign-in" and it took me to a page that looked very official. The page wanted me to update my info with eBay because eBay want to verify and update my info due to an increase in scams and  due to security concerns. I thought this was odd. I hit back page and it wouldn't go, try to get on eBay's main page and re-click "sign-in" and got back to the same page.

What alerted me to the phishing scam. The "update" page wanted my personal banking account, routing number,  and PIN among other things.

It is my opinion that eBay will never and has never asked me for my banking account number, routing number or PIN.

So....if a web page claiming to be eBay or PayPal asks for these things then more often then not its a phishing scam.  Just type into those fields..."SMELL YA LATER SUCKER" and report the web address.

I believe the scammers may have infected my Internet Explorer via some form of virus or trojan horse that made my web browser take me to the phishing page when I hit "sign-in" on eBay.  I now use Firefox, run an anti-virus screen often, run spy-bot, run 2 firewalls and even dumped my hard drive and re-installed windows in case of keymappers. Oh and change those passwords....often.

Hope this helps...and don't forget to give me a vote.

Addition:
Also another cue to watch for when you are suspicious of a phishing scam is to look at the url (web address). Get to know your urls. Some ebay addresses are like these www.ebay.com, www.buy.ebay.com, www.hub.ebay.com, www.signin.ebay.com.  If you get suspicious then look at the web address and if it looks odd like this one www.ebay.ic.com or maybe www.ebayui.com then maybe its a fake site. Its kinda hard to tell but if you get familiar with some of the urls then at least your a bit on top of the game. Same goes for Paypal. Good luck fighting these criminals. GET TO KNOW YOUR URLs!
