Envious of those hobby shows with spacious workspace? Tired of dragging everything out to the kitchen table just to put it back in a few hours? Want your own Craft or Hobby Room but your rooms are limited?
Build a Craft Corner workstation for Scrapbooking, Stamping, Card Making, or model building in any corner of a room in your house or even in a closet and do it all for under $50!
Materials you'll Need
1 each 2 by 4 stud cut into two pieces of 22 inches and 48 inches
1 each Melamine covered particle board workstation top 22 by 48 inches
1 roll of Melamine edging tape to cover raw edges
3 white pegboards 30 inches by 30 inches
1 pegboard hanging kit containing plastic spacers
20 drywall screws at least two and one half inches long
8 drywall screws at least one half inches long for the L bracket
20 two inch pegboard hooks
1 each wood bannister rail at least 30 inches tall
1 two inch L shaped bracket
Above wood items can be cut for you at your local home improvements store or purchase a circular saw.
Step 1
Choose a good location for your craft corner. You will want to avoid a space that is accessible to small children and pets.
Step 2
Once you have chosen your corner measure up the wall from the floor 30 inches. Mark horizontally on the wall where you would like the top of your workspace to be located.
Step 3
Place the 2 by 4 studs against the wall to meet in the corner. See the above illustration. Make sure they are just under your pencil line as your board will rest on top of the pencil line. This will support and brace one half of your workspace top. The bannister rail will be the leg that supports the other half. Locate the studs in the wall with a stud finder and screw the two stud braces into the studs behind the drywall. Make sure both stud braces are level.
Step 4
Slide the Melamine top into the corner and screw it down with one screw in the corner and one at the edge of each side for a total of three screws. Predrill these holes to avoid cracking the Melamine. Place the wood bannister rail on the opposite corner to form the other support and use the L bracket to screw into the leg and underneath the table and this will avoid placing holes in the top of Melamine. Check the level of the table before finally screwing the leg in place. See the above illustration.
Step 5
Decide where to hang your pegboards. Use the spacers in between the back of the pegboard and the drywall to avoid marring the drywall and also to have enough room for your hooks to catch in the back of the pegboard.
Voila, it done! For a feminine touch add boa feather trim to the top of the pegboard and self sticking ribbon to hide the seams between the pegboards. A nice three inch wide left over piece of plywood about 40 inches long laid across 3 evenly spaced pegboard hooks will make a nice shelf for your ribbon as seen in the illustration below.
Don't Forget, the space underneath the table - Don't waste it! You can add shelves and pegboards for extra storage. A nice wooden utensil trays makes splendid storage for ribbon and wire spools. A small cart with wheels can extra storage space and it can roll under the workstation when not in use.
