Costume Jewelry Collecting..What to look for when buying jewelry online or at auctions,Estate Sales,etc.....
When you are out and about, maybe looking for a deal,You may stumble across some Great Vintage Jewelry.
Tools of the trade that you should always carry with you are a black uv light, a minimum 10x jewelers loop and if you are really serious a diamond tester...
(These can be had online on ebay) Here are somethings to think about...
1st...condition,condition,condition......Does the jewelry have all of the rhinestones or parts?
Are those rhinestones clear or are they broken and discolored?
As in a brooch or a pin...Does the piece have the pinback that is original, or has it been replaced?
If they are earrings..are they clip back ,pierced, or screwback..That may be able to help you to date them!
A necklace...does it have a strong chain? A strong safety Clasp? Does it fit well?
What is it made of? Is it sterling silver 925 ,silverplated? Gold or goldtone? The values increase with precious metals.
Is the piece signed? Most of the time Signed pieces sell for more,,
Do Your research on the name...You would be amazed at the values of some pieces..
Character and Figural Rhinestone or Enamel pins sell very well..Who doesn't love a cat or dog rhinestone pin?
These are a few things to think about next time you are buying jewelry...
