Greetings Corvette fans...
For those with a C3 Vette, let us talk a little about the GROUND straps and points on these cars... most of the electrical wiring on these older cars heavily rely on good ground connections... My first suggestion is that you not only just check them but take the time to remove them and clean them then use a small amount of black chassis paint and seal them... there are many points and in a effort to not take away sales of schematics, I suggest for you ride you have either the factory GM manual or get a online downloadable version of the manual for you car.... there are a few that have all the years and some that are specific like the 82 CrossFire year.
Alot of the switches in the car can be cleaned with CAIG LABS Deoxit D5 spray cleaning (free plug) and works miracles on these cars. So with that all in mind lets first give a few good pointers...
1. You must have a clean air source (NO OILER SYSTEM) or use the hand held computer cleaner cans... probably want at least 4.
2. Disconect the batter!!! This is a must or you will fry some of the contacts! Not becuase of the cleaner but becuase of the dirt that will wash over them and BURN!..
3. Clean all the grounds on the car, inside, outside and in the motor area... check the book there should be a whole bunch... all are imortant....
4. Clean the batter terminals and if neccesary replace the screws if you cannot tighten the side mounts....
Good idea to check the main battery connectors at the start, and body ground!
5. On most C3 there is connector that is right after the starter that passes most of the accessory electiric into the car for almost everything, it is important to remove this and get small brass brushes and clean this the best you can ( avoid steel it will cause it to rust) and or you can spray it with the Deoxit and unplug and plug it back in at least 5-6 times to scrap the contact clean then one last spray to preserve it...
Not the DEOXIT is a cleaner enhancer, it is flamable so make sure you let it dry or blast it off with air, the only issue with it can be in the window and door lock switches, I recommend you blast them first with air then spray with deoxit once then air then repeat then srpay with Deoxit again and work switch repeat the air Deoxit about 2-3 times and let them dry for about 30 minutes, NOTE this will NOT ruin the switchs at all and will make them better if you follow this...
I recommend the DEOXIT on all contacts, bulb backs, bulbs sockets, battery terminal/cable ends. And open every weather pak connector open spray put back together and repeat about 5-6 times to clean the contacts.
More to follow....
