Cornhole is a fast growing game that is sweeping the country. Although its been around for some time, it has really taken off in the past 5 years. When buying cornhole sets you should be aware of the differences in boards and bags, since there are a few different styles that are popular in different areas of the country. For more information you can visit my about me for a comprehensive resource on the difference between the styles.
Boards-
The 2 prevelant styles are what's referred to as "traditional" and the "Tailgater" style of board. The traditional is the more popular and measures 24" wide x 48" long with a 12 degree pitch. The Tailgater styles is popular because its smaller at 24" wide and 35.5" long. The reason for the name is simple, it fits easily in most trunks for easy transportation. There are many parts of the country that the tailgater styles is more popular. It just depends on preference.
Some notes on buying boards:
-3/4" plywood is always ideal for the surface, as it gives the perfect amount of bounce. Try and stay away from products made with MDF, a lesser quality replacement.
-Plastic boards, although an interesting concept, generally do not play the same way as wooden boards. Plastic tends to have too much slide for your average player. If you are used to a wood set, then I would stay away from plastic. With plastic sets you generally are going to have to get used to throwing the bag into the hole, since most "on the boards" will slide off because of the slick surface. Wood has the advantage because if the surface is too slick or sticks too much, there are remedies.
Bags-
The standard is 6x6 duck cloth filled with 14-16 ounces of feed corn. A suitable replacement is also trigger cloth. Both have been proven to withstand long hours of play, even on concrete.
Some notes on buying bags:
-Although it might be tempting to buy bags that have your favorite teams logo, be wary. Some vendors will use lesser quality fabric and your bags will not last long.
-Any reasonable vendor should have a guaranty behind their bags, some for up to 6 mos. Ask the person you are buying from if they are willing to stand behind their bags.
